How do security systems work?

The crux of the home security system is the control panel/command centre located in a convenient part of your home. The control panel communicates with sensors around the house that detect movement when activated. These sensors are installed in entry points around the home, including doors, easily-accessible windows and, occasionally, open spaces.

The control panel is used to activate and deactivate the sensors. These are often protected with touch pads and codes to protect intruders from accessing them.

Door and window sensors are made up of two separate sensors placed separately. One is placed on one side of the door or window, whereas the other is placed on the window sill or door hinge. When a door or window is opened or closed, the two sensors become connected and trigger a response to the control panel, triggering an alarm.

Motion sensors are also often used and can protect an open area. Whenever movement is sensed within the range of the sensor, a signal is sent to the control panel to trigger an alarm. These are most often used to protect more valuable rooms, such as bedrooms and living rooms.

Surveillance cameras can also serve as an extra layer of protection. They can be either wired or wireless and often display obscure and remote areas of the home. These are often used to monitor the home when you are away and can be accessed via your mobile phone or computer.

Of course, the most important deterrent to home intruders is the security alarm. These are extremely loud and usually alert burgers to escape immediately. When the alarm is triggered, your security company, if you are paired with one, will also receive notification and act promptly.
